The Modern Woman Journey to Freedom

By Jumoke Esuola

Over the years, feminine genders are known to experience different dimensions of segregation societally. Starting from the very beginning when a female child is born, the joy that be-chances the parents and the society at large is doubled when a male child is brought to life. This is so because the family name won’t die out.

As the boys advance to maturity, they are mostly excused from all forms of home chores within the household, however, girls have no choice other than to do the housekeeping. In view of doing this, a girl begins wondering what grave offense has she committed to have inflicted on her such punishment!

Parents begin keeping track of her habit as she develops to maturity. They criticize her, claiming she behaves not like a lady, her every movement is monitored, and every action is controlled.

Right from a tender age, she is prepared for marriage, she is taught what and what not to do as a married woman, and all her dreams and aspirations are cut short, the only dream she is left with is that of supporting her husband’s dream and caring for the children-all others are null and void.

As it is globally known that education is very essential for a great future, some societies dogmatically termed that a waste of money and effort. They opinionatedly affirm that her place is in the kitchen and to take care of the home. All these would make her wonder, ” Don’t I deserve a great future as well?”She is categorized as part of the inheritance, available to other members of the family if, unfortunately, her husband dies.

She wishes millions of times that she wasn’t born a girl so that she could enjoy all of the benefits the opposite sex is showered with, she feels apologetic for her femaleness and her femininity.

She manages to secure a better education. she will be told not to express herself too boldly or with so much affirmation, not to appear too smart or else she would scare away all of her suitors, no man wants a wife that seems too smart. She airs her opinion concerning a situation and she is considered as being rebellious.

After graduation and after securing a job, she is being paid less than her male counterpart irrespective of her competency.

She tries to build her career to later become a successful young woman, but society continues to believe that she acquired that not by her capabilities but by how well she offered what she has, which is her body to get what she wanted.

She is not expected to live on her own, because it is only immoral for a female to rent an apartment and live on her own as it is believed that there is no other reason but to accommodate her multiple sexual partners. She is expected to move from her father’s house to her husband’s house.

If she has to rent an apartment of her own then she has to be represented by a male or else the apartment won’t be rented out to her. She doesn’t have the right to vote or make any crucial decisions in society.

She is believed to be too successful and that is why no suitor is approaching her therefore is advised to dress down, abandon her fancy house and her fancy car and walk to wherever she is going rather than ride her air-conditioned car, maybe she will see a suitor that finds her worthy enough to save her from her dreaded state of singlehood because “your mates are married”

All of these are the prejudices against women from time immemorial and have transitioned into different categories, taking different forms over the years as time changes. With the relentless effort of women by taking cautious actions to make themselves relevant to be viewed in another light other than being weakling and clueless creatures who have no idea on how the world works and have no contribution to make to build it.

These barriers have been broken and the biases have been drastically reduced, women have shown themselves to be just as capable as the opposite sex in the four walls of the classroom, in occupations society thought they wouldn’t dare to take up such as medicine, engineering, law, architecture and much more, in top tier positions in the society, in political positions, also in the hyper-growth tech industry.

women have proven themselves to be just as worthy as anyone could be.

To quote the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The process, the progress, and the achievement are reflected upon and are appreciated in order to acknowledge and encourage the women because “women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a tremendous power in the destiny of the world.”

Women are therefore celebrated in every field for how far they have come, how well they have proven themselves likewise how far they have also contributed to world development.
