The six training sessions are scheduled for six Saturdays: 15th April to 27th May, from 11:00am-1:00p.m. After the course of the training, they will be paired with other participants and required to produce a data story.

Other UDUS students selected for the training are: Mohammed Taoheed, a 200-level law student, Mudathir Hayatullahi, a 400-level student; Faruq Ibrahim Olaoti, a 300-level student of Political Science and Omotayo Fatimah, a 300-level student of Education Biology.

Speaking with the NewsDigestPress, Hussain Wahab, a 400 level law student and Managing Editor of Digest expressed his joy over the opportunity.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to learning more. No doubt, this will shed more light on data journalism and opportunity to explore other genres of journalism. It will be worthwhile,”he said.

“I therefore encourage other students to look beyond the four walls of the classroom. They should try to define what they are capable of doing and leverage it; be involved in extracurricular activities, try opportunities and always think beyond impossibility.”

Shereefdeen Ahmad, the Editor-in-Chief of the News Digest Press and 300-level law student on his own part said: “The training will reflect on my journalism career. This particular one will reinforce and expose me to sourcing, visualization of data and Its application to storytelling. And it will definitely go a long way in exposing me to another field of journalism which is data journalism and how to actually use data to tell a story.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with the President of National Association of Campus Journalists(NACJ) UDUS chapter,
Olokooba Abdulwasiu, a 500-level law student said he believed the Danfodiyo student-Journalists have what it takes to compete even at global level.

“I feel fulfilled that NACJ members were able to take the advantages of all the life-changing opportunities that are coming their way,”he said.

” It shows how progressive we have been in recent times. The next target is how to expose our members to international gigs and opportunities because I believe they have what it takes to compete at the global level.”
