Jambito Diary: You Never See Anything: My Experience as a Fresher in UDUS

By Lamid AzeezĀ

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is an institution with little eye on social life and brunt weather but it primed and nurtured students in character and knowledge.

The level of happiness for being admitted into the university lay beyond what mouth can spew. It is a feeling of ecstasy and excitement. Luckily, I am pleased to be among the admitted students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto for the 2022/2023 academic session.

My curiosity had triggered me to undergo some research based on the school’s system ahead of my departure from home and the information received was satisfactory.

However, my journey to Sokoto was accompanied by Freshers like me, who shared their past experience before they secured the admission even though I had nothing to share being my first experience; we became acquainted well with one another. Our journey came to a halt at Makwa, one of the famous places in Niger state to grease our dry throat and feel brim. I thought we were close to our destination but little did I know of the tedious journey.

After spending nine hours grumbling on the road of Niger state, I felt sore all over my body and pulled off my clothes due to the heat from the bus’ engine.

No Matter the Length of a Tunnel, it Always has an End

We arrived at the school campus after 16 hours of unfriendly journey from 8:00 in the morning till 1:00 at midnight. It wasn’t child play, we were welcome and stayed over one of the empty rooms in the school hostel, Jubril Aminu to relax and rest till daybreak.

However, the first experience I had was against all probability, it wasn’t sweet nor pleasant to tell. It was topples with a display of the scorching sun.

Upon seeing my reluctant attitude, I was welcomed with the student’s clinch ‘you never see anything, they play’ this tugs my mind and I set to survive it no matter what comes.

It then came to my realization that the school’s motto ‘Iqra'(read) aligns with the student’s norm, classroom becomes home and home becomes classroom. The intensity of students reading will inspire one to read even if you don’t want to, it’s only a matter of time.

My final intake, although UDUS is a university with little eye on social life and brunt weather, it primed and nurtured students in character and knowledge, I must repeat.

To live socially inclined you have to rent a house or an apartment. Also, sleeping outside isn’t a new option to students because the intensity of the heat will force you out to sleep.

UDUS my life. We will both pass through each other to reach the envisioned feat.
