The Threat of Nigerian Insecurity and Impact on UDUS Students

Insecurity has assumed a soft spot in Nigeria. Everyday, bandits and terrorists unleash mayhem on innocent people living in both rural and urban areas. Hundreds of thousands people have been displaced and many have lost their lives as the federal government could not tackle the issue.

To wit, the lives of students traveling to schools are at high risk since the country itself is not safe. The impact of insecurity in the school has been the reason why some students tend to read in their hostels rather than going to night classes at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

UDUS Students Count Losses

Abdulkareem Mubarak, a 300 level law student from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has bemoaned how the spate of insecurity on campus.

“When we were on strike, our room was burgled by unknown people,” he said. “We were notified by one of our senior colleagues. He went to school during the strike to inspect the Private hostels, so he decided to branch out since he knows our room number. Without hesitation he quickly snapped the room and sent it to us through WhatsApp.”

“Most of our valuable items like shoes, clothes, gas cooker and food stuff were stolen, so it makes us financially unstable because we are unable to cook for up to 2-3 weeks”,He added.

Abdullahi Salim, also got his own fair share of the insecurity on Danfodiyo campus.

He said, “On 21st,November 2021, when l resumed school to continue my academic career on getting to my hostel l noticed my room door had been destroyed. Unfortunately, many of my luggage l left had been stolen”.

Ishola Bishola on her part said: “On a particular night, my friend and I were going to night class. Unfortunately,we didn’t know there were men following us with a speedy movement. Suddenly,we just heard a thick voice say,”Hey you ladies” the moment we heard their voice we turned back to them. Unknowingly to us, as they approached us with harmful objects asking for our belongings immediately we realized they hold harmful objects we gave all we have on us”.

“I felt bad that night we couldn’t see any security officer that will help us”, she added.

The EX Chairman of the Nigeria Police Service Commission,Chief Simon Okeke said
“When I came into office, I thought that Nigeria Police was the least paid in the world.”

“Our policemen are not well trained. They’re not used to modern policing. All they know is the use of force, not service,” he added.
