How to Deter Crime in Our Society

By Abdulkadir Sofiullahi

Today, crime has become a normal thing in our society and those who abandon the acts are perceived to be abnormal beings.

For the purpose of this discussion, one ought to understand what crime is.

Crime is an act of committing a wrongful act by deviating from social norms. The manners at which these social vices are entreated in our society requires weighty attention. And if not properly addressed could pose a great threat in our society. Of course, criminal acts cannot be completely eradicated, it is an intrinsic and inevitable part of social life. No doubt, people will definitely indulge in crime, but crimes can be reduced with justice and good governance.

Crime is not only limited to the confrontational form of wickedness. Rather, it also includes impersonal and unconscious form which may be perceived through incompatibile interest and strategy of achieving a particular goal

Some of these abnormal behaviors that are fundamentally wrong and against social norms are– Rapping, robbery, corruption and etal. However, the victims are trapped which ultimately lead to death while some end up with deadly diseases as a result of depression.

Why do people commit a crime?

Many young people commit crimes today due to the influence of peer groups. They see their friends engaging in such acts. This is common among high school and institution students. Hard drugs; weed, marijuana are consumed like water in order to ‘ be high’ and fear no being. Some pay no attention to young age being a critical stage of growth; since they are not filled with wisdom and neither with those who will guide their ways and share experience. They take criminality as a career and something to be boasting of.

Most youths who don’t have a strong will to neglect or confront minor criminal acts often end up getting involved in big troubles. Unfortunately many young people don’t realize that they’re doing multiple criminal acts by being a part of things they aren’t supposed to be. Therefore, peer pressure is another notorious reason for why young people are compelled into joining the bandwagon.

A person who is addicted to drugs will at one point in time do something he/she isn’t supposed to do. Drug addicts are often unable to get rid of addiction as a result of their life being filled with bad habits. A poor lifestyle compels a person to adopt habits which he/she should distance themselves from. After research, when the most violent criminals were asked about their crimes, they blamed drugs as the main reason. Drug addiction is another rampantly growing disease which has slowly encapsulated many parts of the world.

Poverty; the inability to get daily meals lures some into a bad gang. Some people committed crime not intentionally but as a result of suffering and they could not think of something rather than engage in crime. Man always finds a way to survive.

To curb this, our law should be enforceable without any form of injustice. Many times, we have seen several cases buried because the perpetrators were able to influence the judge. It’s unfortunate that this has become a culture.

To cap it all, I implore everyone to stay off crime and also anything that can deteriorate the tranquility of society. People should ensure justice is served, in doing this, we shall have crimes alleviate in our society.
