Muheeb Mashood and Abdulganiyu Azeez report
The Caliphate Law Clinic(CLC) of Faculty of Law in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has scheduled 26th and 27th September to hold street law campaigns.
The clinic was established to educate students of law about how to serve underprivileged people as well as promoting and empowering beneficiary initiatives.
In collaboration with the Nigeria University Legal Aids Institution (NULAI), the clinic
will engage in the community based intervention program.
The interested students visited the Law Clinic office on Monday, 18th September and on Tuesday, 19th September to receive materials containing some fundamental human rights.
Speaking with The News Digest Press, Rodiyah Omotoyosi Mikhail, the chair lady of the program explained that the program is aimed at helping people to organize themselves in order to facilitate social and political developments, while awakening awareness among the students, media personnels, students’ leaders, union leaders and leaders of civil society organizations.
“This project is expected to gather people from different associations to train them about rules that guide communications, enlighten them about their rights, in order to achieve socio-political developments,”she said.
Miss Omotoyosi identified CLC as one of the first three law clinics across Nigeria universities to be selected for the program. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Bayero University, Kano are the other two.
In an interview with the Clinic Head, Aishat Yahya Zakariya, also said that the key area of this program is to educate people on their fundamental rights and how to approach the necessary court if any of these rights are breached.
“We are hosting this program for the purpose of protection of human rights and the measure to take when these rights are wrongfully breached.”
Meanwhile, Speaking with The News Digest Press, Dasuki Ibrahim, a 200-level law student expressed his joy to be among the participants of the programme as it will be the first of its kind to him.
“I’m elated to be among the selected students for the upcoming program which borders on protecting civil and political rights in Nigeria. Because this is the first of its kind I will be attending.
“I will be able to broaden my knowledge on the major issues surrounding civil and political rights, that is, freedom of expression, assembly and political participation. I will also know to what extent the law permits these rights and its limitations,” Dasuki added.
“More so, I will be privileged to pass this knowledge to a layman during the upcoming campaign and make them know their rights and how the law makes it fundamental. And when a breach occurs, how can they seek Justice?”
