The Law Students’ Society(LSS), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto chapter, has started a mooting and mock competition for female law students.
This was disclosed in a flier released by the LSS Judiciary through the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Naheem on Friday, 13th October, 2023.
The competition, sponsored by Prof. Ibrahim Abdullahi (SAN), is themed “Battle of Female Advocates” and will be held in honour of Justice Amina Adamu Augie, retired Justice of the Supreme Court, and former lecturer of the faculty of law, UDUS.
According to the flyer, the registration for the mooting is free which is open till 20 October 2023. Interested participants were expected to form a team of three, and advised to obtain a registration form from the court registry of the faculty.
Also, registration of teams will be on a first come first serve basis with a maximum of six slots available.
After the conclusion of the competition, the best team, first runner-up and best advocate will be awarded with a cash prize while issuing certificates to all participants.
Speaking with The News Digest Press, the Chief Justice of the LSS Judiciary, Babatunde Raji, stated that the motive behind the competition was to increase the participation of the female law students in moot court activities, noting that mooting activities are always dominated by the male.
“We looked into this problem of the low turnout of female students’ participation in moot court activities, and decided to work out a solution by giving an avenue to the female students to come forward to showcase their skills, this competition serves as that avenue.”
He said that the competition was to recognise the positive impact of Honourable justice Aminah Adamu Augie, JSC (Rtd), whose life is worthy of emulation.
“This competition serves to honour Honourable Justice Amina Adamu Augie JSC (Rtd) who remains a shining star and a worthy ambassador of Nigeria worthy of being emulated. We hope that her qualities such as her charisma, competence, courage, discernment, self discipline will be emulated by all of us.”
