Akaje Maimunat, a 300-level student of the English language emerged as the Rookie Journalist of the Year in the 2023 News Digest festival, held at Multipurpose Hall2 (MH2) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto main campus on Sunday, 5th November 2023.
Recall that Maimunat had previously participated in the Abdullahi Tijani writing contest, which took place from August 28th to September 30th, 2023, Where she equally achieved finalist status
In an interview with Maimunat, she expressed her joy at receiving the Rookie Journalist award, even though she was not anticipating it due to the high level of consistency and performance of the board members.
“I was elated upon receiving the rookie Journalist award, though I wasn’t expecting the award because new members of the board have their consistency and doing well,”
Attributing her success to her dedication to consistent writing, she added that her writing skills had significantly improved during her time with Digest.
“I have learned a lot in Digest from the little time I spent being Digest members. My skills have improved as editors always bring consistency in our ear.”
