Reporter’s Diary: How Hunger Nearly Killed Me Last Night

By: Abdulkadir Sofiullahi

On a frigid winter’s night at Jibril Aminu Hostel, I shivered as the cold wind seeped through window cracks. The thin walls offered little protection from the bitter chill. The heater wheezed, but its feeble warmth did little to dispel the icy air. I pulled my blanket tighter, longing for a warm bed and a cozy fire.

Despite my best efforts, the solution to my problem remained elusive. I searched high and low and consulted every resource but to no avail. Frustration mounted, yet I refused to give up. With renewed determination, I brainstormed new ideas, determined to find an answer.

Losing the food I heavily relied on was a crushing blow. I felt as though the rug had been pulled out from under me. It was hard to accept, but giving up was not an option. I had to find a way to move forward.

The loss was especially difficult as the food had been a kind gesture from a friend. I felt despair and guilt for taking advantage of their generosity. However, I couldn’t let emotions overwhelm me.

That night, I went to bed with an empty stomach and a heavy heart. Physical hunger was tough, but the emotional toll was harder. I prayed for the thief’s realization and hoped for amends. Despite feeling wronged, I chose forgiveness, knowing that harboring resentment would only bring further pain. I resolved to start fresh in the morning.
