By Abdulmalik Abdulwahab

Olutimin Ilenre, a young graduate of History and International studies from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo state, set all his academic records on fire due to the formidable challenges posed by unemployment.

This was contained in a video surface on the social media  where Ilenre set his degree testimony, National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) and West African Examination Council (WAEC) on fire— condemning the prevalence of  unemployment rate in the nation. He claimed that the certificate of degree was a waste of time.

“I graduated from University in 2010 and did my NYSC in 2011. For 13 years I have been unable to secure a job in spite of my certificates. The certificates prove not useful and it is better to be illiterate,” he lamented.

He further said that acquiring academic certificates does not actually guarantee a successful life, according to his experience. He added that even travelling abroad, the certificates are rendered useless.

Ilenre is  not the first Nigeria graduate to burn his certificates.  In 2019, a graduate was reported to have burnt his certificates saying “school is the biggest scam in the world”.
