Fate’s Compass: The Tale of Hafsat and Haliyat

By Muhammad Akindele

In the journey of academia, where dreams intertwine with the rhythms of hope, Hafsat Danjuma found herself entangled in the unpredictable voyage of university admissions. As the JAMB CAPS danced with promises of admission, Hafsat, like her fellow ‘jambites’, eagerly anticipated the transformative shift from “ Not Yet Admitted” to the coveted “ Admission In Progress”.

Hailing from the North Central region of Nigeria, specifically Kogi state, Hafsat harbored a fervent desire to make a positive impact through a career in the medical field. Nursing with its compassionate allure, became the beacon guiding her academic aspiration.

However, fate, often capricious, played its hand, unraveling her dream and steering her towards an unexpected course.

The transition from nursing to microbiology was akin to a nightmarish twist, leaving Hafsat grappling with an endless challenge. Sorrowful lyrics resonated in her mind echoing the sentiment of someone robbed of a fortune. “ Will this be the end?” she lamented, questioning the unfolding chapters of her academic journey.

  1. Yet, amidst the chaos, Hafsat confronted a pivotal choice to resist the detour and explore new horizons or succumb to the weight of shattered dreams. The intervention of her family members became the compass guiding her decision. Reluctantly, she’s accepted the shift, finding solace in their encouragement. “ Microbiology is also a very nice course,” she reasoned, attributing the twist of fate to a higher design.

Undeterred by the unfamiliarity of her new course, Hafsat love for UDUS and her determination to excel propelled her forward. “ I am ready to study the new course,” she said.

Haliyat is another aspirant who encountered a similar twist. From the cocoon of her childhood dream of becoming a nurse or doctor, she emerged into the reality of a redirected destiny. Opting for nursing during her JAMB registration, Haliyat was bewildered to discover a transfer to physiotherapy when admissions were released.

“ I chose nursing because I love to become a nurse or a doctor, ” she said, echoing the sentiment of a dream an unforeseen detour.

As a fresh graduate of secondary school who found the entry system of the university strange, she didn’t know what to do next than to seek clarity through a Google search and check what the new course was all about. The findings that physiotherapy remain under medical faculty sparked a glimmer of hope; made her happy even though her dream had been shattered. She embraced the course with newfound enthusiasm, recognizing it as a divergence within the medical field.
