“It looks easy said till you give it a trial yourself.” goes a popular saying. Back home, Ramadan was fun and an exciting voyage we highly anticipated. Our mothers and sisters took up the culinary responsibility, something that goes a long way in bridging barriers that could hinder our fast. Sometimes we, men, don’t bother to offer a helping hand as we see cooking as a feminine duty. “It’s their job, so we just feast,” we said most of the time.
During Sahur, most guys just wake up, brush their teeth, pray (not all of us sha), and eat. The women take care of it all. You have to wonder, is life really that easy for men? Because everything seems automatic, especially that feeding part.
The beautiful routine continues until we’re on our own. Like at university. Now we have to do everything ourselves.
Cooking meals can be tiring, I wasn’t told. Sometimes, you cook food (better-called nightmare, because of how unpresentable it looks) and forget to wake up for the sahur meal, so the food becomes charity for “yaro boys” the next day.
Now things are very hard. Everything feels boring, you’re tired, malnourished and you’re getting skinny for lack of good food. Why? Because you can’t cook or take care of your basic needs yourself. That’s why you see so many guys just eating instant noodles and fura.
At this moment, you realize how much hunger bites, and how much you are losing to fast-food vendors. Going days without Sahur will force you to go back to the same ladies you failed to appreciate. Either to ease you off the stress by cooking for you, or teaching you how to put a modest meal on to table yourself.
Conclusively, women are important to men, not just for procreation. The role women play in our society cannot be overemphasized. The main reason why a building transit to a home you feel worth returning to. Quite sad most of their efforts go unnoticed. The purpose of this write-up is to analyze their efforts in the kitchen which most of us do not really value. However, there are other duties they do that men overlook.
