Western education was introduced during the colonial era by the British to liberate us from our traditional mindset. Initially, it was met with disdain and considered irrelevant in our society.
In many African households, sending a child to school was viewed as akin to enslaving them, with no one to advocate against this forced education. Children were compelled to attend school, and our ancestors often saw it as a necessary evil, particularly for orphans, though they secretly believed it would lead to suffering.
At a point, these abandoned children started coming back home with a meaningful life, which made many start changing their negative attitude towards education.
In our present time which we have grown old and fast in Western education, many conceived it as a yardstick for elevating poverty in our societies.
Education is the only source through which one can get a white-collar job that can earn him or her a reasonable income for the standard of living. Because of this majority are eager and willing to sacrifice all that it takes to attend a Western education.
Our colonial masters brought it as light to our forefathers, yet they could not recognize it as such, rather they conceived it as a thing to Wash away their culture.
In our modern Nigeria, many have attended this level of learning at its peak, yet it is seen to be a waste. The young who are expected to be desirous of this have developed some kind of neglect and turn back against it.
Now the question is “Should we abandon education because it is not yielding what it should?
One may feel disappointed in it only if she or he has never understood the evil of education.
The evil of education may not be seen directly as we thought of it but believe me it remains an imperative thing in our societies.
It opens up doors that the ordinary would have not opened and shines the light that the ordinary can never see.
It still stands as a yardstick for measuring the development of one’s self and society at large. For so many times I overheard many students including myself regretting the whole thing, but it’s not regrettable because, if not for the education you shouldn’t have seen ways and reasons why you should avoid it, and a burning desire for it would have continued in you as long as you live.
The unseen evil of education is very crucial in running our day-to-day activities as its senses direct us to the right thing at the right time. It helps in solving problems that may seem to have no solution.
Therefore, never deceive or be deceived by what people may say about Western education, yes it may be seen as a waste of time, energy, and resources but hold on surely you will come to understand the rudiments of it.
Remember, who no go, no go know
If you don’t attend, you won’t understand it’s a waste of time.
