The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) branch, has honored and celebrated the outgoing vice Chancellor and 20 retired lecturers of the university.
Held at the university auditorium on July 10, 2024, the event not only aimed at honoring the retirees but also featured a valedictory lecture.
The event had the attendance of vice chancellors from various universities, including UDUS 6th and 7th former Vice Chancellors, Prof. Emeritus Tijani Bande and Prof. RS Riskuwa, as well as other notable figures.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. M.Z Umar, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Benin Kebbi, recognized the remarkable work done by the outgoing VC.
The guest lecturer, Prof. Oluwatoyin Temitope Ogundipe FAS, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, emphasized the need for increased government funding for universities in Nigeria while also stressing the importance of universities generating their own internal revenue.
He further appreciated Prof. Bilbis for his remarkable journey and ASUU (UDUS) for choosing him and recognizing its members, stating, “If we don’t celebrate ourselves, nobody will celebrate us.”
ASUU president Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who was represented by ASUU zonal coordinator, Sokoto State Prof. Abubakar Sabo, presented awards to the 20 honorees with additional 300,000 Naira.
“The honorees had served the association well and deserved to be celebrated,” Said prof. Sabo.
Prof. L.S Bilbis, described as an achiever, called on the university staff to work hand in hand to move the university to its peak, emphasizing that he is leaving a united university.
