As Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) resumes for a new academic session, the Faculty of Law has unveiled a newly constructed monument to replace the former law scale symbol
The newly completed structure, in courtesy of professor Ibrahim Abdullahi, SAN, is located outside the Faculty of Law complex gate, and has departed from the traditional Justice scale statue commonly seen in most law faculties across Nigeria. Instead, the monument features a symbolic design of a legal wig placed on books, a move many students say reflects professionalism, integrity, and the prestige of the legal profession.
While many students commend the faculty management for the initiative, others have also called for improvements in other areas of the faculty.
Students React
Abdullah Gali, a 200-level law student, described the new monument as more than just a beautiful structure. He said the new faculty of law edifice is not only beautiful, but also reflect the standard of legal education
Gali added that the design makes the faculty stand out, as it goes beyond the popular Justice symbol to represent legal activities and professionalism.
He, however, appealed to the management to improve the facilities in the students moot court.
A 400-level student, Abubakar Gambari, also praised the development, saying it made him feel proud of the faculty.
“The new facility is a great development, and I feel excited that new developments are now in the faculty,” he said
According to him, what stands out most is the uniqueness of the structure.
“Unlike the usual Lady Justice design in many law faculties, this one is different. The wig placed on books symbolizes that the wig is not worn on an empty head,” Gambari explained.
Yisau Babatunde, a 300-level student, described the edifice as professional and visually appealing.
“I feel great. What I love most is how the structure shows the professionalism and beauty of the legal profession,” he said.
He also urged the faculty to improve sanitation.
“There should be improvements in the toilets to stop students from urinating around the buildings. The auditorium and its chairs also need proper cleaning,” he added.
A 100-level student, Ismail Mardiyah, expressed excitement and pride over the new facility.
“I feel very happy and proud. It shows that the Faculty of Law is not child’s play. The wig symbol means a lot in law, and I am glad our faculty chose to represent it so well,” she said.
She, however, appealed to the management to consider the needs of female students.
“I would like the faculty to help us by constructing a separate masjid for female students,” she said.
