Real Madrid delivered a memorable European night on Wednesday as they defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
The match belonged entirely to Federico Valverde, who produced a sensational first-half hat-trick to put the Spanish giants in firm control of the tie. The Uruguayan midfielder etched his name into the club’s European history with a breathtaking display that left the Bernabeu crowd in awe.
Despite missing several key players through injury, including Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid still produced a dominant performance, sealing the victory with three first-half goals.
Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute after connecting with a long ball from Thibaut Courtois. He calmly beat Nico O’Reilly for pace, rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and finished confidently from a tight angle.
Seven minutes later, he doubled Madrid’s advantage. A clever pass from Vinicius Junior found Valverde in space, and the midfielder struck a composed left-footed effort past Donnarumma to send the home supporters into celebration once again.
Just before half-time, Valverde completed a dream performance. He controlled a delicate chip from Brahim Díaz, lifted the ball over Marc Guéhi, and volleyed brilliantly into the bottom corner to seal his hat-trick and cap a remarkable first-half display.
Despite enjoying more of the ball, Manchester City struggled to turn possession into real chances. Pep Guardiola’s side held nearly 60 percent possession but created very little, with star striker Erling Haaland largely kept quiet by Madrid’s organised defence.
Real Madrid had the chance to extend their lead in the second half when Vinicius Junior stepped up from the penalty spot, but the Brazilian missed. Even so, Madrid remained comfortable and controlled the remainder of the match.
The match ended 3–0 in favour of Real Madrid, who will travel to the Etihad Stadium next Tuesday for the decisive second leg.
Mixed Reaction
After the final whistle, Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised his players and the atmosphere inside the Bernabeu.
“I’m very happy for the players and the supporters. Nights like this remind everyone what Real Madrid represents. We showed our character and quality.”
An emotional Federico Valverde also reflected on the special moment.
“You always dream of nights like this as a footballer. I’m grateful to my teammates and the coaching staff for the trust they have in me. Today everything worked perfectly, and I really enjoyed the game,” he said.
On the other hand, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted his team struggled but remained hopeful ahead of the second leg.
“They defended very well and took their chances. The scoreline is difficult, but football can always surprise you. We now have to focus on improving,” he noted.
