Let’s talk about the Faculty of Law election, 2023. Earlier on Wednesday, Hamza Diyaulhaq Barade, one of the presidential candidates for the LAWSAN election 2023, was seen campaigning for the UG2 law students.
He, in his words, stressed, by assuring that the learning wigs as to his plan will tackle the hurdles the students face as undergraduate law students. Barade among other things said: “We have plans in making the learned seniors put the juniors through so as to ease the affairs and smoothing their LLB program.”
On the other side of the coin, Imogbemi Tiamiyu, Mr Barade’s only opponent was seen in a campaign video all over WhatsApp status and groups where Mr Tiamiyu was assuring virtually the same thing Mr Barade was assuring.
But one question, where is the plan to implement all these promises? Is this a heartfelt message that comes out of compassion or the normal political deceits and lies? Is it another Buhari-like manifesto or a genuine vow?
Candidates have been going all around, telling people things, making vows, promises which to me sounded too illogical to fulfill. Do pardon me if you think I’m trying to sit on the fence. You ought to know– journalism and politics are two different fields connected but can never be fused, neither can they be one and same. This time, whether I meant rightly or rightly I meant, I’m not talking as a journalist— rather, as a law student who hopes the president elect will be the acumen of hope, station of solace and office of freedom.
Am I the only one who felt the lingering of the above questions? Nope, logically and intellectually: the whole students of this faculty deserves an answer to that if not answers. Saying ‘I will do this and that’ is just a pre-introduction, a theory which is subject to questions. Make it concrete— show that those plans possess actualization. This is what the faculty demands. And not– ‘I will do this and that’ like the acclaimed Messiah who promised to change Nigeria to paradise within a year. I asked– what is the result?
Anyways, my advice for the entire faculty of law that will vote tomorrow; Believe in who you vote for and don’t vote for who you don’t believe in. Remember, your decision will bind you for a year. This is the real prayer and not just begging always, when we are not ready for change.
