Before addressing the issue of hostel generator, we, the students, believe that despite some issues remaining unaddressed by the current Students Union Caretaker Committee, notable progress has been made in various areas across school hostels.
Whether it’s the installation of new water tanks or the renovation of the hostel reservoir, the current administration of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Student Union has set a high standard, which makes it earn the reputation of the best administration from the 2019/2020 academic session to date. Many previously overlooked issues are now being actively considered and resolved.
During Barade’s tenure, especially for those admitted in 2019, his dedication to student welfare was evident. We know what he did and what he left unaddressed. Also, Umar Shamsudeen’s administration was marked by numerous successful projects but left some unaddressed.
However, despite the current administration not yet reaching its end, it is fair to say this administration stands out as the most impactful thus far, from the 2019 to 2020 academic session. Hostel residents can readily attest to these improvements.
Repeating what was said earlier, the student Union recently provided new water tanks to hostel blocks and renovated the hostel’s water reservoirs as a critical need. Before, students could not drink the hostel reservoir water due to its state, but now, students not only bathe with it but also use it to cook. However, there remains a significant issue that students are eagerly waiting to see resolved: THE HOSTEL GENERATOR.
We acknowledge that not every project can be executed simultaneously, but as some needs are met, others become more pressing. Students endure nightly blackouts, a situation that was once alleviated by a generator operating for three to four hours each night. For nearly two years, the generator has not been functioning.
We trust that the Student Union will address this concern. Restoring the generator’s operation would bring back the vibrant campus life we once enjoyed in those years. It’s been almost two years since the generator last served us, and we believe in your ability to rectify this situation.
Many students have delayed their return to campus, scared of the inevitable struggles with electricity. They are reluctant to spend money charging phones and power banks before using their electronics. Some students are even residing in town temporarily to avoid the unbearable suffering on campus.
Dear Student Union, you are our beacon of hope. You have the power to restore those lively nights on campus and renew our confidence in your leadership. We earnestly hope for the revival of our generator. God bless you.
