How “E” and “D” grades Spoil Students CGPA

By Babatentegi Abubakar

One thing you need to know first is that Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) is used to measure the overall academic performance of a student.

Now let’s begin with what a grade is. Grade in education is an attempt to apply standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course. Grades can be assigned as letters, as a percentage, or as a number out of a possible total.

Another thing you need to know here is that grades serve many purposes. Grades help in evaluating students’ work, effort, understanding of course content, skill development, and progress. It also serves as a source of self-motivation to students for more improvement

Grades are commonly taken in the form of five or six letters which are A =5 points, B=4 points, C=3 points, D=2 points, E=1 Points and F=0 points. A being the highest and F being the lowest.

Now, how do the E and D grades spoil CGPA? Here is the CGPA calculation.

Let’s assume each of the courses below is a 3-unit course.

Bio101E=1 x 3=3

Chem101 E=1×3=3

Mat101 D=2×3=6

Phy101D=2×3=6

GST101 E=1×3=3

Bch101E=1×3=3

Total unit =18

Total point=90

Student point=24

CGPA=Student point/Total unit

       24/18=1.33

Here, another student offers the same courses as shown above with the same units.

Bio101 A=5×3=15

Chem 101A=5×3=15

Mat101 B=4×3=12

Phy101 C=3×3=9

GST101 A=5×3=15

Bch101 B=4×3=12

Total unit =18

Total point=90

Student point =78

CGPA=Student point/Total unit

               78/18=4.33

With these differences, I believe you have agreed that E and D grades do nothing but spoil the CGPA.

With the calculation so far on how ‘E’ and ‘D’ grades spoil students’  CGPA, here are the categories of students with different levels of classes.

1) First-class chasers (these only need A and B grades).

2) Second-class upper chasers(A, B, and C grades).

3)Second-class lower (A, B, C, and D grades

4)Pass (E and D grades)
