EXAMINATION BLUES: How GST Mass Failure Hits UDUS Students

While many students would consider a Computer Based Test (CBT) for the General Studies (GST) exam and see it as a technological advancement, students of the Faculty of Arts and Education, respectively, have no good impression about it. They have, unscrupulously, been ‘endowed’ with carryovers in their GST 312 — Venture Creation and Growth. ahead this age is mostly by embracing technology. So is the narrative in UDUS after the 2017/18 second semester. In this report by the NEWSDIGEST, the searchlight is on how many students are rendered helpless, after a donkey-like efforts._
Graded “F”, After 39 In C.A
As believed – examing students has from time immemorial and due to a uniform grading system – been a combination of C.A test and Examination scores. In this case of a student from Law faculty who spoke with the NEWSDIGEST – there is tendency for one to believe a change is looming has hinted by the GST division in the last General studies Examination.
“My name was pasted on the notice board at the GST division among students that did not sit for GST 106 test, which I actually sat for” says a student, who in his reluctance pleaded anonymous with this reporter. Giving account of his reaction to the sheer incident, he continues “I approached the Director of GST division to tell him the situation and that was when the director gave me the chance to see my actual score in the test. He also helped me to correct the mistake made — luckily, my name appeared on the notice that very moment I was with him”
As if the omission of his name on the notice board for those that sat for GST 106 test wasn’t enough. Still, after the CBT exam – despite scoring a jaw-dropping scores ( 39 of 40marks) in the test – he was graded below his expectations.
“Surprisingly, when the result was released, I was graded ‘F’. ” He says, with his facial expression explaining more of his bitterness. Speaking further, he reiterated the fact that he sat for the exam “After I scored 39 out of 40 in the C.A Test and also sat for CBT exam”
Narrating his efforts to get the problem rectified, he says : “I came to school purposely because of the aim of rectifying the thing. Unfortunately, I met him some days after the ASUU strike commenced, but he said nothing can be done on it untill after the resumption. But up till now, the result is still there as it was before. No change”
Reign Of ‘F’ ; Agony Of FAIS Students
In some sayings, delay is not denial – so as many believed. But in the case of the 300level students of faculty of art and Islamic studies – the outcome of the delay seems adding insult to injuries – rendering many students helpless, not voiceless.
“When I meet him to complain after the result was released, He said the problem is from the pro-metric, and he promised to collect our result from them (pro metric) and he will juxtapose it with our test result”, says Asheer Kankara ; a student of history while expressing his agony and the reactions of the GST director who flawed one of the centers for the on the situation.
He adds, “I have seen my test result, I scored 30. Though he didn’t give us a specified day to come back”
In his words , Abdulazeez ; a student of Literature In English lamented how almost all 300 level students of MELL were unexpectedly, awarded ‘F’ in GST 312 , “Almost all of us failed in my class” – he says angrily,while his countenance corroborating the bitterness he harbours. He continues, “Except a lady who did her own exam with another department that scored ‘A’ “.
Lashed Hope
Before , GST courses used to be the last hope of many students, those whose their respective departments never seized friendliness on hot seat. But as the case embraced reversal, the before songs of last-hope turns lashed-hope. Speaking with the NEWSDIGEST , Umar Kabir ; a 200level student of Public Administration – in his words, narrates how almost half of his course mates become the lucky victims of unlucky harvest of failure in GST 103 result.
“During that time when GST results were uploaded, half of my class are the victims of unreleased result for GST 103”. He says, explaining that initially, the result was not released but after complaints, the development was teary.
“Because of that, we complained directly to the director of GST division, which after some days, we are all graded ‘F’ – whereas, we sat for both test and exam with 75% attendance in that GST 103”, he adds , evidencing that the move by those victims to have their results released in the first place, later fetched “F” as outcome.
CBT : ‘First Attempt’ To Be Goofed
Who knows ,the case might have been worsened as days pass by, but due to his ( GST Director) effort to address what – according, was to be a causation of ‘first attempt’ – many students are still full of hope their grade would – without missing road again, locate their respective student’s profile.
Responding to questions on this issue, The Director ; Division of General Studies makes his own clarification – on the ground that such a scenario is inevitable at the outset, owning to the fact that the development is still new in the school system. “All these that we had are because that was the first time”, he clarifies, subjecting ‘First Attempt’ to a usual alibi-free nature in every new development. He continues, “whatever you do for the first time, you will have one or two issues that you will address before the next one and that’s why we are now addressing them.”
Reiterating on his relentless effort to have the issue rectified, he says ; “Since we are also parent, I will do that one on Monday. Please tell the victims to see me on Monday”. He however, enjoined the victims to revisit GST division on Monday – 25th March, 2019, promising that the issue would be corrected.
