UDUS’ Students’ Union Purchases Ambulance, Sets To Assist The University Clinic

Olokooba Abdulwasiu reports

In view of the challenges facing the University Clinic, the Students’ Union of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto , has purchased a seperate ambulance to complement the effort of the school and the management of the university clinic in ensuring the sanctity of life of students.

Speaking with our correspondent, Comr. A.A Funtua ; the SU Welfare Director, explained how lots of complaints from students residing in the school halls of residence, on the non-availability of the school ambulance at times – to convey students in need of emergency medical attention to the school clinic, facilitated the project.

“We bought this ambulance due to the complaints we received, especially in the midnight, from students leaving in the hostels on the absence of vehicle to take them into the clinic when the needs arise” – explained, Funtua

Explaining further, on how the union intends to manage the ambulance and whether they have any plan of handing it over to the university Clinic Management. He further revealed that the Union has in her plan to employ a driver, who will man the ambulance, and also, provide a cell phone line to ease the students of both city campus and permanent site in securing the service of the ambulance.

He added : “Because this administration sees the welfare of the student as utmost priority. We are going to provide a driver together with a cell phone for students to call, anytime whenever there is an emergency – to secure the service of the ambulance.”

Reacting on the new development, Isiaka Yahaya ; a 200level student of Mathematics Department, described the newly purchased ambulance as a great and viable support to the one on ground which is very insufficient in catering for the needs of the students

He said : “If we look at the rate at which the need arises for ambulance service especially during the heat period, you could see that the old one is not that enough to satisfy the needs of  students. For instance, at times there would be an emergency at NANA ASMAU HALL, and at the same time another one in Kwankwasiya hostel or I Blocks.”

“Asides, the only one available before is too small and can’t even take two patients at once. So, this newly bought one will surely support alot in relieving the old one provided by the management” – Yahaya added

Another student, Musa Ahmad ; a 200l student of economics, while commending the effort of the students’ union, described the ambulance as a great improvement on  students welfarism and  a channel of enabling  student to have access to urgent medical attentions.

“I commended the SU for this improvement on our welfarism. The ambulance will surely make it easy for student to have access to immediate and urgent medical attentions whenever the needs arise” – he said

He however, advised the union to take proper maintenance of the vehicle and ensuring the ambulance serves its cause.

“I would just advise them to take good care of it and make sure it’s truly of students advantage” – advised, Ahmad
